10.1 Comparing AI vs. Human-generated Text
Image
AI vs. Human

Objective

  • Differentiate AI-generated text from human-authored content.

  • Identify elements that hint an AI’s presence.

Materials

  • Short Text Samples: Get at least two pairs of text passages—one generated by AI (e.g., GPT-like system) and one by a human. These can be short essays, product reviews, or simple stories.

  • Comparison Checklist: A simple rubric or worksheet that prompts learners to look for clarity, coherence, factual accuracy, emotional tone, style, etc.

Gather each text pair without searching which text is human-authored and which is AI-created.

Keep them similar in length and theme (e.g., both talk about visiting Paris, but in different styles).

Instructions

  • Step 1: Read each pair of text samples without knowing which one is AI-generated and which is human-generated (blind comparison).

  • Step 2: Check off observations or comments on the comparison checklist—Is the language consistent? Are there factual errors? Does the text feel “robotic” or “authentic”?

  • Step 3: Check which passage came from AI. If you are working with a team, encourage discussion or reflection on how many guesses were correct, what tipped other learners off, and what impressed or disappointed them about the AI output.

  • Brainstorm AI-based solutions to hypothetical everyday problems (group or self-reflection)

What to Look For

  • Stylistic Consistency: Human writers often have unique voices, while AI can revert to overly formal or patterned sentence structures.

  • Contextual Understanding: AI might miss cultural nuances, idioms, or context-specific references that human authors handle naturally.

  • Error Patterns: Repetitive phrases, factual distortions, or contradictory statements are red flags that the text might be AI-generated.

  • Which features in the AI text made it stand out? (Repetitive phrases, “robotic” transitions, factual slips)

  • What qualities did the human text have that AI struggled to mimic? (Personal anecdotes, emotional depth, humor)

By performing this activity, you will be able to distinguish well between human and AI-generated text and understand the weak points.
